ADD/ADHD information Empty
PostSubject: ADD/ADHD information   ADD/ADHD information EmptySun Oct 21, 2018 12:13 pm

So just thought I would share this in case anyone was not aware of it, and for the younger members here that may know of a classmate that has ADD/ADHD. Many times we are quick to judge, and that is because we do not understand what ADD/ADHD is.
So please take a few minutes and read this post which may answer some of your questions and help you understand it a little better.

What is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral condition in which children or adults have difficulties paying attention and focusing on tasks. This common disorder begins in early childhood and can continue into adulthood. If not recognized and treated, it can cause problems at home, school, and work and with relationships.

About 3 to 5% of the world's population has ADHD.

Types of ADHD

There are two types of ADHD: Inattentive and Hyperactive.

-Inattentive ADHD, also known as ADD, makes it harder for the person to pay attention, especially to activities that are uninteresting or hard. This type doesn't usually come with hyperactivity, although there might be slight hyperactivity.

-Hyperactive ADHD makes it harder for a person to control their impulses (like blurting out things) and the person is more hyper (restless, such as jumping around, fidgeting etc). They can have a tendency to get disorganized. The inattentive factors are also included in this type of ADHD.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

The three types of ADHD symptoms are:
Inattention. This is the most common symptom. In addition to having difficulty paying attention, people with this symptom often are unable to consistently focus, remember, and organize. They may be careless and have a hard time starting and completing tasks that are boring, repetitive, or challenging.
Impulsivity. People who frequently act before thinking may not make sound judgments or solve problems well. They may also have trouble developing and maintaining personal relationships. An adult may not keep the same job for long or spend money wisely.
Hyperactivity. A hyperactive child may squirm, fidget, and climb or run when it is not appropriate. These children often have difficulty playing with others. They may talk a great deal and not be able to sit still for even a short time. Teenagers and adults who are hyperactive don't usually have the more obvious physical behaviors seen in children. Rather, they often feel restless and fidgety and are not able to enjoy reading or other quiet activities.
Many children with ADHD have signs of both hyperactivity and attention problems. This is called combined type ADHD. When children have significant problems with hyperactivity and impulsivity and fewer problems with attention, it is called predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type ADHD. Some children mainly have problems with inattention and fewer problems with hyperactivity and impulsivity. This is called predominantly inattentive type ADHD

Symptoms of all types of ADHD can range from mild to severe.

What can I do to get rid of my ADHD?

So far, there's no specific cure for ADHD. There are several medications you can get from your psychiatrist or neurologist (the only ones that can correctly diagnose you) that can make concentrating and sitting still easier. In some areas, there are Acts allowing teens or children with ADHD that have a document from a doctor in their school profile to get extended test time, extended homework time, permission to get copies of notes etc. (in section 503 of American Disabilities Act)

If you have ADHD, your life can still be as bright as any other persons! Just learn how to control it - get help from your boss, school and parents and you're sure to succeed in everything you do if you try hard enough!
